How to Catalog a Comic Collection
Full Report
A useful catalog starts with consistent identities. Work through one box or series at a time and finish each small batch before moving on.

1. Set up a repeatable workspace
Keep the comics supported and your hands clean and dry. Choose an order you can follow again: title, series or storage box. Set aside books that need closer identification instead of guessing their details.
2. Identify the exact issue
Record the series, issue number, publisher and year. Check the printing and variant where the evidence supports them. A familiar cover can appear on more than one edition, so compare the physical book with the suggested record.
With Comic Books Vault scanning, Vault Pro members can photograph or upload a cover, review the suggested identity and correct details before saving. A readable barcode may help narrow the candidates. Identification does not authenticate a signature or establish a certified grade.
3. Record the copy you own
Add quantity, condition notes, purchase details and a recorded value when you have evidence for one. Combine quantities only when the copies share the same details. Separate signed books, different variants and copies in different conditions.
Use a consistent name for each storage box and keep the physical arrangement aligned with your records. If a field is not available in your chosen tool, use a clear note rather than overloading an unrelated field.
4. Review before moving on
Search for the title and issue to catch accidental duplicates. Check that the record saved and synchronized. Look at a few entries against the books in front of you; small corrections are easier while the batch is still on the desk.
5. Keep an independent backup
Export after a meaningful batch. Keep a native JSON backup for supported import and a CSV or Google Sheet for spreadsheet work. Importing the same backup again can create duplicates.
